Irregular Vaginal Bleeding

Most women have regular periods which occur monthly with bleeding lasting anywhere from 3 to 5 days.

Referral to a Gynaecologist may be required for women who have:

  • Bleeding between their periods (intermenstrual bleeding).
  • Bleeding after intercourse (post coital bleeding).
  • Bleeding after the menopause (post menopausal bleeding)

When seen by a Gynaecologist:

  • A history is taken and an examination is performed (including a cervical smear).
  • An ultrasound scan may be arranged to assess the uterus and ovaries.

A Hysteroscopy (inserting a telescope into the uterus through the vagina) may be recommended to diagnose and treat the following:

  • Endometrial polyps (overgrowth of the lining of the uterus).
  • Submucous fibroids (small lumps of muscle).
  • Abnormal endometrial thickness.

A Hysteroscopy involves a light, general anaesthetic and lasts approximately 20 minutes - find out more.
